The Oakwood Barons will be back trying to defend its championship and win its eighth Heinbuch title. They will be joined by fifteen teams from around the province. The Heinbuch Classic committee welcomes Peterborough Adam Scott CVI Lions and Brampton St. Roch CSS Ravens who will each be making its first appearance in the Classic bringing to 109 the total number of schools who have participated over the tournament’s 33 years. All games will be held at Conestoga College Athletic & Recreation Centre which is located close to Highway 401 (exit 275). Sixteen games will be played on Friday, November 25 beginning at 8:45am and continuing all day. Play will continue on Saturday again beginning at 8:45 am with the Gold Division Championship game at 8:15pm.
There will be an admission charge of $5 for adults and $2 for high school students beginning with the four Division Championship games which start at 3:30pm on Saturday. All proceeds will go to the Heinbuch Classic Bursary program which sponsors deserving Grade 9 students to attend a Summer basketball camp..
There will be a parking fee on Friday from 8:00am to 4:00 pm. Follow the signs to Lot 11. Parking Friday after 4:00pm and all day Saturday is free.
Yep! They did it again. Toronto Oakwood won the Heinbuch Classic for the 5th consecutive year and record-breaking 7th time overall. It did not come easily. Alexander Comanita made a 3 pointer at the buzzer in overtime as Oakwood defeated Waterloo Sir John A. Macdonald 75 – 72 in the Championship semi final. Oakwood then overcame a 7 point halftime deficit and went on to victory in the final against a fine Hamilton Sir Allan MacNab squad 68 – 61. Congratulations to Coach Miller, his staff and student-athletes. Congratulations also to Coach Fisher, his staff and players of Sir Allan MacNab for a fine tournament.
Stoney Creek Cardinal Newman defeated Guelph Bishop Macdonell 57 – 55 in the Silver Division final as Maleik Gordon scored at the buzzer.
Kitchener Waterloo held on for a 49 – 46 victory to capture the Bronze Division Championship against Waterloo.
Hamilton St. Thomas More was victorious 47 – 41 in winning the Consolation Championship over London H. B. Beal.

The Consolation Division has Hamilton St. Thomas More Knights, Sarnia Northern Vikings, Upper Canada College Blues and London H. B. Beal Raiders. Well, “almost” and “they did it again” come to mind. Kitchener St. Mary”s Eagles “almost” became the first Waterloo County team to win the Heinbuch as they jumped to an eight point lead at the end of the first quarter, extended the lead to ten before leading by six at half time. They still led by six entering the final frame before Toronto Oakwood Barons, led by the poised and experienced tournament MVP Calvin Epistola finally took a two point lead with three minutes to go on the way to a 57-52 victory.Yes, “they did it again” as Oakwood won the Heinbuch for the sixth time tying the most championships with the strong Toronto Runnymede teams of the 1980″s / 1990″s and have now captured the title for four straight years. Coach Miller, his staff and the young student-athletes can feel proud of this accomplishment.

What a great day for basketball fans. Twelve games were played with 9 decided by a single digit score including an overtime game, a double overtime game and a triple overtime game. The championship game saw an experienced and well-coached Toronto Oakwood squad defeat a very athletic Kitchener St. Mary’s team which has exciting potential moving into the season 69-57. Oakwood won its 5th Heinbuch Classic championship trailing only the powerful Toronto Runnymede teams which won 6 championships in the 1980’s and 1990’s.
Scarborough Mother Teresa defeated Burlington Nelson 67-60 in the Silver Division final.
Hamilton St. Thomas More defeated Brantford North Park 41-36 in the Bronze Division final.
