This tournament is named in honour of Court Heinbuch, former Head Coach of the Cameron Heights Golden Gaels from 1969 to 1985. On February 12, 1985 Court passed away from a sudden heart attack. As coach of the Golden Gaels, he led them to many successes, the pinnacle being 1982-83, when they won 6 tournaments and the All-Ontario AAA Championship.
Court was born in Kitchener in 1940, and as a youngster, excelled at hockey and baseball. He was an overpowering left handed pitcher and led Kitchener Minor Baseball Teams to Ontario Titles and later pitched in Ontario’s finest senior league and at the national level. In basketball, Court played on Championship teams at Eastwood Collegiate, and later led McMaster and Waterloo Lutheran Universities in the OUAA.
Mr. Heinbuch’s teaching career began in Math and Physical Education at Eastwood C.I. In 1969, when Cameron Heights C.I. opened, Court moved there to began building a basketball dynasty. Over his basketball coaching career, he amassed six City and County Championships, had an 80%+ winning record and was renowned for his incredible competitive spirit.
He is survived by his wife Nancy, son Jeffery and daughter Kristen. Although he is sorely missed in basketball circles, his name will live on, in one of Ontario’s most prestigious basketball tournaments.
